Elements of a calvary: the Virgin and St John. Andean alabaster sculptures from Huamanga, in northern Peru.

The Jesuit missions in the region since 1580 made Huamanga an important art center from which our two statuettes probably come from. Finely executed, they are presented on later marble bases.

14th C Virgin and Child.  Important sculpture in polychrome wood with a cavity back. Sligthly bending sideways to balance the child on her left arm, dressed in a tunic covered with a coat with wide folds, she wears a veil surmounted by a crown. Her beautiful serene face with delicate features, with a half smile, underlines the tenderness of a mother for her son. From France.

Saint Barbara. 16th C Statue in carved and polychrome wood. Richly dressed, she stands next to the tower where she was locked up by her father. Her young girl’s face, with regular features and with  a plentiful hair evokes her legendary beauty. The three windows which symbolize the Trinity, recall her conversion to Christianity cause of her martyrdom. Swabian work.

St Antony the Great. 14-15th C Statue in carved, gilded and polychrome wood. He is also named Anthony the Hermit and considered the father of monasticism. Dressed in a tunic under a hooded coat, he holds, in his rigth hand, the T-shaped stick which is his attribute. Barefeet symbolize his desire for deprivation. The open book he looks at expresses his commitment. Gothic period. From Southern France ?
