16th C Sorrowful Virgin from a group representing the Crucifixion, in carved, gilt and polychrome lime wood. Her face, enclosed by the wimple with eyes looking toward the Christ, expresses deepest sadness. The back is hollowed out, the ancient polychromy partially original. From South Germany.
